Global climate change has become a major issue that affects various aspects of human life and the environment. One of the most obvious impacts of this phenomenon is the increase in the frequency and intensity of floods throughout the world. Factors causing flooding due to climate change include rising global temperatures, melting ice and an increase in extreme rainfall. Rising global temperatures cause faster evaporation of water, creating more water vapor in the atmosphere. This has the potential to increase the intensity of rain, which in turn could trigger flooding in areas that were previously not vulnerable. For example, research shows that higher temperatures can cause rainfall to increase by up to 20% in some tropical regions, resulting in large bodies of water. Melting ice in the Arctic and Greenland is another factor that is exacerbating the situation. Melting ice causes sea levels to rise, resulting in coastal flooding in many parts of the world. Major cities such as Jakarta, Bangkok and Miami are threatened by more frequent waterlogging, affecting millions of residents and infrastructure. In addition, shifting weather patterns due to climate change make floods more difficult to predict. Normally dry areas may experience heavy rains while frequently flooded areas may experience drought, creating new challenges for water management systems. With the increasing frequency of floods, socio-economic aspects are also affected. Poor people are often the most vulnerable groups, because they do not have the resources to recover after a disaster. The impact of flooding is not only limited to material loss and disruption of daily life. Public health is also threatened, with an increased risk of waterborne illnesses, such as cholera and other infectious diseases. Floods can also cause mental health problems and lasting psychological impacts for victims. Food availability is also affected. Floods damage agricultural land, destroy crops and disrupt food supply chains. As a result, food security in many countries is increasingly threatened, pushing up food prices which of course have an impact on people’s welfare. Governments and international organizations are trying to develop mitigation strategies to reduce the impact of flooding due to climate change. This includes building better infrastructure, such as dams and drainage channels, as well as developing more effective early warning systems. Ecosystem restoration activities, such as reforestation and wetland restoration, are also attempted to reduce the impact of flooding. Society must also play an active role in efforts to overcome the effects of climate change. Education about the importance of sustainability and good management of natural resources is vital. By increasing awareness and collective action, the impacts of climate change, including global flooding, can be more easily managed in the long term. Collective action from individuals, communities and governments will be very meaningful in facing the challenges posed by climate change and flooding. Overall, only by working together to find creative solutions can we create a safer and more sustainable future.
